CONDUCTORS
Clarinetist and conductor Dr. Joe Dieker is Emeritus Academic Dean and Professor of Music (retired) at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa. He now serves as Artist Instructor of Clarinet at Cornell in his semi-retirement. Quincians may remember Joe as Professor of Music, Director of Bands, and Dean of Culver-Stockton College where he served from 1989-2010. Joe performed with the Park Band during the 1990s, was Principal Clarinetist of the Quincy Symphony Orchestra for 15 years, and Conductor of the Quincy Area Youth Orchestra for 5 years. An active clarinetist, he has performed in numerous concerts and venues throughout the Midwest and West Coast. His research interests in Victor Herbert’s role as an American bandmaster and march composer has resulted in his creation of modern band editions of a number of Herbert marches, one of which you will hear tonight. Joe earned a B.A. in music from Warner Pacific College, an M.M. in clarinet performance from the University of Oregon, and a D.M.A., in instrumental music from Arizona State University.
Dr. Kenneth Steinsultz is Chair of the leadership team for the University of Evansville Music Conservatory, Director of Bands, and Professor of Music at the University of Evansville. Prior to coming to Evansville in 2008, he served as assistant to the Director of Bands at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 1993-2008. During his tenure at Illinois, Dr. Steinsultz conducted the Symphonic Band 1, the 2nd of 6 bands in the program. In spring 2007 term, he was also the principal conductor the University of Illinois Wind Symphony, the premier band at the University. At the University of Evansville, Dr. Steinsultz conducts the UE Wind Ensemble, UE UniversityCommunity Band, Aces Pep Band, UE Low Brass Ensemble, and teaches courses in applied low brass and conducting. He has performed with the Quincy Park Band, Quincy Symphony Orchestra, Mississippi River Brass Band, Champaign-Urbana Symphony, Danville Symphony, Illinois Symphony, Evansville Symphonic Band, Bend in the River Brass Band, and the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra. He holds degrees from Quincy University and the University of Illinois.
